PERSPECTIVE ON THE NEWS
Making capital punishment obsolete
The issue of capital punishment continues to concern many. This has been brought to the fore recently in the United States by the execution of a convicted murderer. Until 1977, there had been a ten-year halt in executions. After many states in the early 1970's had passed a variety of capital punishment laws, in 1976 the United States Supreme Court ruled the death penalty constitutional under certain circumstances.
Deeply felt debate on capital punishment erupts from time to time in other countries.
The tragedy of violence, brutality, and murder must be arrested and subdued. To play our part in this necessary redemption, we need to do more than take a political position for or against the death penalty. The lust and self-centered rage that lead to capital offenses must be expunged from the human mind. Self-righteous anger about the crimes of others will never do this.
