One morning I noticed that my foot was swollen
One morning I noticed that my foot was swollen. As there was no discomfort, I did nothing about it. However, I recognized that this was an abnormal condition which should not be accepted as part of my true being.
Some time later I was incapacitated by a painful swelling of my entire leg. I called a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer and began a sincere study of Mrs. Eddy's writings, using the Concordance. We worked with references on muscles and joints. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy asks (p. 160), "Can muscles, bones, blood, and nerves rebel against mind in one instance and not in another, and become cramped despite the mental protest?"
And, on the same page, she answers, "Unless muscles are self-acting at all times, they are never so,—never capable of acting contrary to mental direction." Elsewhere she states (p. 393): "Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation."
