I feel extremely blessed to have a loving mother who is a practicing Christian Scientist. I had a large measure of protection from all so-called children's diseases. A slight case of chicken pox, and later measles, were completely healed in two days.

At the age of twelve I had an attack of what appeared to be appendicitis, after I heard it described in hygiene class. Other members of the family were afraid. My mother made them leave the room, and turned earnestly to God. For several days and nights we sang hymns and read together the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly. When the pain was severe, we sang Mrs. Eddy's hymns, and finally the pain vanished completely and never recurred. I returned to school healed.

After the Second World War, I married and had two lovely children. A very unhappy situation developed because of my husband's drinking. As a result I had a physical breakdown, and a heart condition developed. I was bedridden for three months. During this time my mother took me into her home, and I studied night and day. I used the Concordances and the Bible, and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and her other writings, and also sang hymns. The practitioner I had called asked me to look up the word "yield." This statement in Unity of Good by Mrs. Eddy stood out clearly (p. 60): "This false sense of substance must yield to His eternal presence, and so dissolve." The extremity of my situation made me turn more wholeheartedly to God. Later, after my husband's passing, I was able to assume the care of my home and children on my own.
