Flowers of Bethlehem
A card came by mail today
from a troubled Holy Land
bearing flowers—
all their original exquisite
form/color
pressed intact.
I consider them.
Surely Solomon's robes
may have shimmered in
such a scarlet as this one.
And that petal pink
with a hint of purple
would have been becoming to
any of Sheba's queens.
Then I consider
Mary's bright blossom.
Jesus, as he grew,
was clothed by his heavenly Father
in a garment of righteousness,
was anointed the Christ
with the oil of gladness.
The words he spoke have made
flowers bloom in eager hearts
across time/nations
flowers of healing
flowers of love
flowers of peace
more radiant even than
the lilies of the field!
