At a time before "learning disability" was used to describe children's reading problems, our son was underachieving in his schoolwork. When we moved to another state, he was assigned to a remedial class with a highly skilled teacher in this field. I had been praying about his problem and having help from Christian Science practitioners at various times.

It was uncovered that because I had been an accelerated student during my school years, I was expecting the boy to achieve a similar record. This led to much disappointment and frustration when he slipped farther behind. The remedial teacher, knowing we were Christian Scientists, encouraged me to continue my prayer, as she had great respect for it. She took a real interest in our son and instructed me in a reading method I could teach at home. He began to improve slowly, and she was emphatic in giving full credit to Christian Science.

At the end of his sixth school year, however, the teacher stated that, notwithstanding the boy's improvement, he would never be able to finish high school, since he was such a late bloomer. He did not have the foundational knowledge required to cope with all the other subjects he would be expected to learn. She recommended he learn a trade.
