Gratitude and joy impel me to write of our fourteen-year-old...
Gratitude and joy impel me to write of our fourteen-year-old son, who was healed of a loss of hearing in one ear. The condition was never medically diagnosed, but the loss appeared to result from an infection. The ear was draining, and the pain was at times acute.
Mrs. Eddy states in Science and Health (p. 41), "Like our Master, we must depart from material sense into the spiritual sense of being." The first step we took to "depart from material sense," and to spiritually correct the condition, was to study "the scientific statement of being" (see Science and Health, p. 468). In this study we were stressing the fact that because man is not material, we do not pray to heal matter, but pray to be guided into increased spiritual understanding. We also pondered Mrs. Eddy's definition of "ears" (ibid., p. 585): "Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding.
"Jesus said, referring to spiritual perception, 'Having ears, hear ye not?' (Mark viii. 18.)"
