Many years ago, six months after the birth of our second child,...
Many years ago, six months after the birth of our second child, a physician told me I would have to remain on medication for the rest of my life. At that time I was tired of taking pills three or four times a day. Anticipating the worst, I resigned my job to be at home with our children while I was still able to lavish them with care. Aside from the health problems, this was an enjoyable time.
Several years passed. One morning after the children had left for school I sat down to read the morning newspaper. There was an item that seemed especially for me. It indicated that through the reading of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, one can be permanently healed. I immediately called the Christian Science Reading Room and talked with the librarian about what I had read in the paper and about my desire to receive a copy of this book. The librarian assured me it would be in the mail that same day.
When Science and Health arrived, I read it eagerly. The first sentence of the Preface was an open door for me (p. vii): "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." And these words confirmed the feeling that God was showing me the way to spiritual understanding (p. 1): "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." With completion of this book I was entirely healed.
