In 1971 I thought I would end my life, since I didn't see any good reason to live. From childhood I had always wanted to know the answers to the apparent mysteries of life. Where was God? What was the reason for living? Why are some people happy and others burdened by physical and mental misery?

I studied psychology to know the basis of human woe. But the search didn't satisfy me. I read philosophy, existentialism, the writings of Descartes, the philosophy of Pascal, and the religion of St. Augustine. For a year I studied in the Rosicrucian Order. But none of this gave me the answer to the origin and destiny of man. One day I entered the local Christian Science Reading Room, and the librarian lent me the book Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. There was no doubt in my mind that this book contained the truth; I didn't doubt the logic of what I was reading. Science and Health was like water to a thirsty person. I decided from the first reading to continue in this way and to become a member of the church that promoted such beautiful truth.

I spent three years in the Army and had the opportunity to put into practice what I knew of Christian Science. During basic training, after two weeks of marching, running, and being on my feet for hours, one foot and ankle were swollen. The swelling was so great I used crutches to walk. The doctors gave me a few weeks to be healed; if I wasn't, I would be discharged from the Army. I decided to call the Christian Science Minister for Armed Services Personnel and ask him to pray for me.
