The art of Christian Science nursing

Surely one of the oldest human skills is that of caring for those who cannot help themselves, especially those in physical difficulty. The nurse now is a respected, appreciated member of society. Nursing is a profession and an art. The nurse, like the artist, needs technique, and vision—in its highest sense.

Christian Science nurses learn the technique of caring for the physical body and the ethics that discipline their profession. Their contribution to the healing work depends on receptivity to the Christ—on expression of the Christ. Mrs. Eddy writes: "Christ presents the indestructible man, whom Spirit creates, constitutes, and governs. Christ illustrates that blending with God, his divine Principle, which gives man dominion over all the earth." Science and Health, p. 316;

When Mrs. Eddy founded her Church, its purpose was originally stated this way: "To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing." Manual of The Mother Church, p. 17; The healing method of Christian Science is purely spiritual, inseparable from the discovery that disease is unreal—no part of God's creation and not a legitimate state for the human race. This Science is understood progressively; so there may be times when a student meets with physical difficulty and needs to be nursed by a fellow student. The Christian Science nurse regards the difficulty as subject only to God's laws, which, through healing, demonstrate the delusion of material health laws.
