When I was a junior in high school, I was taking an analysis...

When I was a junior in high school, I was taking an analysis course in math. My teacher was strict and her tests were notoriously difficult. Only through doing pages and pages of homework and studying all night for tests was I able to maintain a high B. All of my struggles came to a climax during one unit. We were studying parabolas and rational roots, and I soon felt hopelessly engulfed in misunderstanding, unable to grasp a single concept that the teacher presented. The test loomed ahead.

On the day before, there was another problem. As a member of the school band I had to attend a concert that night. So all of my homework, including studying for the test, had to be done in a hurry. At this point I made a decision. I was going to use my understanding of Christian Science to correct my thinking about this situation, which appeared to be a miserable one. I would approach this problem armed with spiritual truths rather than fear and doubt.

When I got home from school that day, I put my analysis book aside, turned the clock away from me, and took the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Not knowing exactly where to begin, I decided to read that week's Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly. But then came a flash of doubt: This is no way to study; how are you going to do well on a test just by reading the Bible Lesson? The answer was clear: I was not substituting one kind of study for another. Rather I was affirming for myself, through truths found in the Bible Lesson, my ability to comprehend any math concept simply because I express God's intelligence.
