Ten years ago I was in very bad shape
Ten years ago I was in very bad shape. My wife had just passed on, and I could not perform my work because of a crippling form of arthritis. The condition had been diagnosed by a company doctor, who said that there was no cure, and I was put on medical leave. Now, in my hour of need, I again turned to God.
Mary Baker Eddy writes (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, pp. 149–150): "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance."
Although I had attended a Christian Science Sunday School, followed by branch church membership, I had left the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and Mrs. Eddy's other writings, on the shelf during thirty years of married life. Now I took the books down from the shelf and applied myself to their study. I found that the letter of Science came back easily, but not its demonstration.
