When I was ready to let go of a material sense of life, I found true Life to be God. An understanding of God as Life was revealed to me through Christian Science during my childhood. Whenever I had a problem, I could ask my mother or grandmother for prayerful help and receive a healing. This family help made it unnecessary for me to use my own understanding.

After my own children were grown a problem arose that did require me to make this effort. I began to believe that my major usefulness to those around me was over and that I faced a dreary future. I was experiencing the so-called change of life. What should have been normal bodily functions became alarmingly uncontrolled. When considering what could be done to stem this action, either application of my understanding of Christian Science or surgery, I decided to rely completely on God.

One day I was so weak that I couldn't get out of bed. I called a Christian Scientist—a friend I was planning to join to attend a meeting—and explained to her my difficulty. She told me that God was with me and not to fear. She quoted from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 187): "There is no involuntary action." She told me the only action I could experience was the action of the divine Mind.
