Many times in my life I have gratefully borne witness to the truth of this statement in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. xi): "The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus' time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation."
Two years ago a small growth appeared on my left earlobe. There was no particular pain or distress, but fear of disfigurement crept in. I remembered Job, who expressed the fact that the thing he greatly feared had come upon him (see Job 3:25). I knew I must rid myself of any fear and turn wholeheartedly to God, who knows no fear and is the sole creator of all that is good. I realized the importance of healing my own thought, because, as Science and Health says (p. 411), "Disease is an image of thought externalized."
Also, I needed to challenge the mortal belief of heredity. I remembered God's instruction to Moses, that when the children of Israel entered the Promised Land, they were to "drive out all the inhabitants of the land and destroy all their pictures" (Num. 33:52). I realized I needed to completely destroy any erroneous pictures of hereditary belief associated with my family background. I must know that good alone is inherited, and from God who is my only Life, and in whose image man is truly made. When I began to search the Scriptures and Science and Health more deeply, and to realize God's greatness and goodness, I began to lose fear and awake to my spiritual identity.
