This is a testimony of gratitude for Christian Science and especially for the Christian Science Sunday School. As a young pupil in the Sunday School, I was able to develop a concept of God that is best described as "a childlike trust." I was able to comprehend in some degree the meaning of the words "God is love" (I John 4: 16), and this enabled me, even at an early age, to feel God's presence and protection.
Later, in my teens, my main interests were my schoolwork and sports. By this time my concept of God had enlarged from a childlike trust to an understanding that enabled me to successfully apply Christian Science in both activities. In Sunday School I learned that a synonym for God is Mind. I was able to see that this meant that God, Mind, is the source of all wisdom and intelligence. Further, I learned from Bible passages discussed in class that man is God's image and likeness and reflects and expresses God. It was easy and logical to conclude that, as God's reflection, I could and did express intelligence.
The realization of this spiritual fact enabled me to overcome fear of tests and examinations and resulted in grades that were acceptable to all concerned. In like manner I discovered that the understanding of God as Life, another synonym for God, could be of immeasurable help in sports. I learned that claiming God as my Life gave me greater strength, endurance, and coordination. By realizing that these qualities belong to me as God's reflection, I was able to compete on a college level in my chosen sport with much more than average success.
