When I was about forty-five years old, I felt a great need for spiritual anchorage in my life. Through a friend who was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church I came into contact with a parish clergyman, spoke with him, attended church services and the Bible circle, and started reading the Bible. In reading the Bible I always felt very peaceful.

After moving to another part of the Netherlands, where I was fully committed to a busy job I had been appointed to, there was hardly any time left for further investigation into questions relating to God, faith, and a more spiritual concept of life.

In this way years elapsed until, at another place in the country where we had extended this work, I was forced to leave my position, due to a conflict with my employer about a question of management. Through a mistake I was placed under the Health Insurance Act and the Employment Incapacity Act. Though I was pronounced to be employable, I was fired and placed under the Unemployment Act, whereupon I filed a suit.
