A healing I had two years ago woke me up! For about eight years I had been ill with an undiagnosed internal ailment. My appearance was so bad that close relatives later said they had thought I would not be around much longer. I was strongly pressured to go the medical route. But I knew the healing of the illness was in the truths of Christian Science, although at different times Christian Science practitioners had prayed for me and the answer hadn't yet come.

One day my husband said, "Why don't you go to the Christian Science Reading Room for an hour each day and learn how to help others." Going for this reason was a new idea, and I was curious. I went to the Reading Room and asked God to show me what I needed to know to help others. The thought came to look up, with the aid of a Concordance, the word "selfish" in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I was stunned to find that Mrs. Eddy uses "selfishness" in connection with such words as "lust" "envy," and "hatred."

Then I looked up the word "unselfish" in Science and Health, and the ideas expressed in those sentences nearly lifted me out of my chair. I had found a dimension of Love I had never known. I felt myself caught up in Love's activity. The feeling of Love's impulsion in me was so intense that I yearned to see, and was not content until I did see, God's reflected love in everything—in friends, acquaintances, strangers, even in small creatures. I began to feel better.
