What We Most Need

Christ Jesus spoke plainly and directly when, in the Sermon on the Mount, he counseled against thinking anxiously about the human body and material needs. He gave affirmative spiritual direction in these words: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness," Matt. 6:33; to which he added the promise that all needed things would follow this right seeking.

Through his healing works Jesus verified the practicality of seeking first the kingdom of God, Truth, in one's thought and living. He knew that the need of mankind is not what people imagine it to be. Matter is commonly regarded as both cause and effect, and we suffer from accepting and acting upon that erroneous assumption. Jesus applied the law of divine Love, of Spirit's allness, in meeting the human need for health and protection from harm.

Mrs. Eddy says, "What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds." Science and Health, p. 4; Finite, personal sense may argue that to be patient, to be meek, to love, or to do good is not always an easy task. But spiritual sense assures us that grace comes naturally, spontaneously, effortlessly, because man is the child of God.
