Twenty-five years ago I was in a deplorable condition with many complaints. Stomach trouble, headaches, constipation, neuralgia, insomnia, loss of appetite, and a restless mental condition—all plagued me. I tried material medicine and all it offered, but when a doctor told me he had done all he could do for me, my despair was great. The unhappiness brought on by this led to the breaking up of my home, and I had two children to think about.

I went to a dear friend's home, and she told me I could find answers to my problems in Christian Science. She said I could learn of God and my true nature as His child, and it would help me. But I did not find the readiness in my heart at that time, and I went on suffering for an even longer time.

When my brother had a severe injury to his arm, so severe, in fact, that the doctors were recommending amputation, I called my friend in great alarm. From her I got the name of a Christian Science practitioner. I was so agitated about my brother's condition I promised the practitioner that if he could help, I would stop smoking. The answer from the practitioner was that we never have to bargain with God. He said I could do more to help if I stopped worrying and trusted God more; with God's help no amputation would be necessary.
