Whose Opportunity?

There is a saying, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity." Does God need "a favorable juncture of circumstances"—as Webster defines "opportunity"—to manifest His love for man? If we remember that God, who is Love, embraces His creation forever in inexhaustible love, then isn't an extremity our opportunity, because extreme sorrow or need forces us to delve deeper into and understanding of the ever-available power of God's love?

But why do we need to be forced? Why don't we all welcome and eagerly accept the good that is available to all, at all times? There are different reasons. Ignorance of God's nature and contentment with the status quo may be among them.

Both these reasons applied to me, for during my high school and college years I lived very contentedly and in complete ignorance of the Divine Being. Then an extremity, a disease pronounced incurable, forced open new avenues of spiritual thought, and I was healed in Christian Science. The years following were greatly enriched through my study of the Bible and the works of Mary Baker Eddy.
