Retirement—a Tempting Morsel?

Approaching the period in life considered by business firms and society to be the retirement age, one may be tempted to look forward to retirement with eager anticipation. Advertising directed toward such individuals indicates in an alluring way the joys of travel, recreation, and other advantages derived from "falling back" from regular employment.

What is man's purpose in life? It is this: to express, to glorify, the Life that is God. And this is our purpose throughout our entire life. It calls for undeclining activity and dedication as well as inspiration and joy. We glorify God, who is Love, not by catering to our own ease and comfort but by considering and promoting the welfare of all those with whom we come in contact and by obeying God's will for us.

Sometimes the fulfilling of the promises of retirement does not proceed as planned or anticipated. Yet it is our destiny to go forward to higher and greater things; not merely to grow, mature, and then to fall back, recede, and withdraw. Christ Jesus in a terse statement concerning the activity of his Father and himself said, "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." John 5:17; The laws of God, of divine Principle, do not reward the pursuit of ease in matter; rather they demand that we think and live always from a vital spiritual basis.
