Obedience Shows the Way

At one time The Christian Science Journal ran a series entitled "How I Study the Lesson-Sermon." I found these articles so helpful and inspiring that I resolved to rethink my approach to the Lesson-Sermon. In the Christian Science Quarterly; After all, I had been giving the lesson daily study for a number of years, and I realized that its study must not be just a good habit, something I ought to do by rote or duty, but that it was divine Love's daily provision of spiritual nourishment, which I could not afford to forgo or neglect.

On this particular morning the first Bible citation read, "So Aaron and his sons did all things which the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses." Lev. 8:36; Immediately the keynote of the lesson for me was "obedience." Aaron and his sons not only heard but carried out, put into practice, the commandments of God.

Then and there I prayed that I might be more obedient and asked God to show me how to go about it. I realized I need not get the lesson word-perfect, but I did need to comply with the spiritual counsel and instruction it provided. It was a matter of using the ideas and expressing the spirit rather than memorizing the citations.
