My gratitude for Christian Science goes very deep

My gratitude for Christian Science goes very deep. My introduction came when I was in a hospital bed. My mother had been attending Wednesday evening testimony meetings in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, for a short time when a condition of mastoiditis developed in my ear. I was hospitalized but given no medical treatment. Those in charge in the hospital were awaiting an improvement in my general condition so that I might survive the surgery they felt necessary.

During this time my other ear became similarly infected, and my mother was given the prognosis that I was not expected to live through the weekend.

Mother asked me to pray as she was also praying—to hold constantly to the thought, God is my Life, and my life is in God. I was twelve years of age and was usually willing to be obedient to my mother's desires. I did as she asked and not only lasted through the weekend but showed marked and rapid improvement. Subsequent examination showed no necessity for surgery, and I was discharged from the hospital as well, without having received any medical treatment. The prediction that I would always have impaired hearing was also proved false. My mother did not have a Christian Science practitioner treat me, because I was under medical supervision, but she held to the spiritual truth of my life in and of God the best she could with her small understanding of Christian Science; and this proved to be sufficient.
