Watching the Trend of Our Thought
It's reassuring to feel we're headed in the right direction in life. But how can we tell if the course we're following is a spiritually progressive one? To know for sure that we're headed rightly, we need to look at a more reliable indicator than the moment's outward circumstances.
Have we considered, for instance, the direction of our thought? To what degree are we turning away from a material view of ourselves and others and centering our thought on spiritual truth, the truth of man as God made him—spiritual, ideal, indestructible? This is the view that heals, and the more our thought is anchored in pure, changeless Truth, the more we can be sure we're on solid ground and are heading in the right direction.
Through the study of Christian Science it becomes clear that to genuinely progress, whatever our current position, we need constantly to watch the trend of our thought. The more deeply our thoughts are rooted in matter—in preoccupation with the physical body, in material ease, in sensual pleasures—the more difficult it is to demonstrate Science and the more we make ourselves susceptible, in belief, to sickness and wrongdoing.
