Shortly after moving to San Francisco, I was taken on a tour of what was then the Christian Science Benevolent Association on Pacific Coast. I have since had need of this beautiful institution for spiritual healing.

One day I found myself with a swollen jaw and a toothache. I immediately called a Christian Science practitioner, who treated me through prayer. After several days the condition did not heal but seemed to grow worse. There was in addition an earache. This happened just a few days before I was to take an important trip. I called the practitioner to inform her that I thought it wise to go to the Benevolent Association for rest and study. She agreed, and I was on my way.

Upon arrival I felt a rapport I have seldom known. The warmth and friendship was so encouraging. The nurses took turns reading to me, and two passages from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy stood out to me: "Sound is a mental impression made on mortal belief. The ear does not really hear. Divine Science reveals sound as communicated through the senses of Soul—through spiritual understanding" (p. 213) and (p. 216) "Spirituality lays open siege to materialism. On which side are we fighting?" Then at about two o'clock in the morning I fell asleep for the first time in several days and nights. I had slept only about thirty minutes when I awoke and something gave way inside my mouth and the abscess began to pass off. It took a few days for the swelling to disappear entirely, but I felt completely free by morning, and by evening I was flying in a plane to be at the appointed meeting.
