We Know God!

One Sunday, the pre-teen class in a Christian Science Sunday School was discussing this question on page 465 of Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy: "What is God?" Mrs. Eddy's answer is: "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." Everyone knew what the seven synonyms were, but the question was asked the students, "How do you know God as these seven synonyms?" They decided this would make a good subject for them to write on for an article in the Sentinel. The following essays are as they wrote them individually on six synonyms. The teacher also compiled their thoughts on Love. The result is how Class 31 knows God.

I know God as Mind, as the only intelligence. Mrs. Eddy says, "The exterminator of error is the great truth that God, good, is the only Mind, and that the supposititious opposite of infinite Mind— called devil or evil—is not Mind, is not Truth, but error, without intelligence or reality." Science and Health, p. 469; Divine Mind is the only intelligence, and mortal mind doesn't have any intelligence or reality—it's just nothing! As we understand God as the only Mind, our thought will be clear enough to see ourselves as the intelligent expressions of this one Mind, as we really are. Knowing this throughout each day helps make all our activities happy and right. I know God as Mind! Robert Winningham

I know God by His synonym Spirit as that which is good, perfect, substantial, everlasting, ever present, all-powerful, and eternal. Usually people believe that spirit has to do with life and death. When a person dies, people believe generally that this person's material body has died but his spirit goes on. In Christian Science we understand that man is totally spiritual and deathless. Human life is like a movie set. When you are on the set, you are acting a part. When you leave the set, this is something like what is known as human death. We can't see the actor but he is still alive and well, but off the set. I know God as Spirit! Ann Bower
