As I was raised in a family of Christian Scientists, I had many healing proofs of the effectiveness of Christian Science to meet every human need, and I have been confident in relying on its healing efficacy for myself. Most of the healings in my younger years were the result of the prayer of my parents or of a Christian Science practitioner. When I became a parent myself, I entertained some doubt and fear as to how strongly I would be able to rely on my understanding should a crisis occur relative to one of our children.

I was faced with such a crisis when our oldest son was about five years of age. He had received a bicycle on his birthday, and I had taken him out on the street to show him how to ride it. After a few tries, he started off on his own, and I ran along behind. Suddenly the front wheel of the bicycle turned sharply and he flew over the handlebars, landing on the pavement.

He was unconscious when I picked him up, and there was evidence of damage to his neck. A great fear enveloped me as I took him into the house and laid him on his bed. A practitioner was called immediately. His spiritual perception quickly identified a major need that must be met to forward the healing of our son— the overcoming of my wife's and my great fear. He told us not to stop in our prayerful work until we could understand what the Shunammite woman meant when she told Elisha (II Kings 4:26), "It is well," in response to his inquiry about her child, who, to material sense, had just died.
