After many operations and much medical treatment, I was spending...

After many operations and much medical treatment, I was spending most of my life in bed. As I had been very active and had a small daughter to care for, this was very depressing. One day a neighbor brought me Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. She showed me at the back of the book the testimonies of healings that had resulted from reading this book.

I knew nothing of Christian Science and, as I was very medically minded, I found the book contrary to my background. At times I threw it aside. Being desperate, I would take it up again and continue to read and to pray that, as the Bible says, the truth would make me free. Then all of a sudden one day I began to understand what I was reading. It was springtime and I struggled to the window and looked out on a new world, beautiful with fresh green leaves and lilacs. By the end of that week I was well.

Soon it was summer and I was eager to find other ways in which this wonderful revelation could help me. I have a very light skin and could never sit in the sun without a large hat and without my body well covered; otherwise I would blister. One week the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly included the following verse from the Bible (Ps. 121:6): "The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night." This gave me courage. After being in the sun I did turn scarlet, but I was so uplifted that I thought, What if I appear to be red, the sun can't affect man, who is not material but spiritual, according to Science and Health. And that was the end of that painful and unhappy problem. Now I can be out in a hot sun for hours with no aftereffects.

Many other healings followed. A form of rheumatics believed by me to be inherited, for which I had taken aspirin daily for many years, was healed. Other healings were of migraine headaches and broken bones. As soon as possible I joined The Mother Church and a branch church and had class instruction. With a desire to help the Cause, I have had the privilege of teaching Sunday School for many years, serving on committees, being a member of an executive board, and serving as Reading Room librarian.

I will always be grateful for the neighbor who brought me Science and Health to read and ponder, for Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, and for Mrs. Eddy.
