I AM THAT I AM (Ex. 3:14)

The forms of the Hebrew verb "to be" making up this name may be understood as present, future, or causative in force, and perhaps even as all three at once. They convey a sense of timeless, creative, self-existent being. The New English Bible translates, "I am; that is who I am," and adds in a footnote the alternative rendering, "I will be what I will be."

Thou shalt have no other gods before me (Ex. 20:3)
