Needed: A Good Shake-up

"Awake, awake; put on thy strength. ... Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, ... lose thyself from the bands of thy neck...." Isa. 52:1, 2; The prophet was writing to the people of Judah in the sixth century B.C., proclaiming the end of their exile from Jerusalem and summoning them mentally to live up to the freedom that belonged to them. But the exhortation might just as well be addressed to human beings today who have apparently had their life experience or their physical bodies enslaved by an oppressive, alien power and year after year are calmly, though unhappily, submitting to it.

It is never right to submit to a despotic influence—to allow oneself to be deprived of mental freedom and joy or of physical health and strength. God, divine Principle, is the only creator and authority, and His law of good assures for all His children continuing, forever-developing life and harmony. We should not admit there is any other power or law.

When a negative force seems to intrude and interfere with our enjoyment of the privileges and gifts that God bestows—making us weak or sick or sad—we should strenuously resist it rather than endure its tyranny. We should recognize such a power as an impotent counterfeit, not honor it as a great authority—perhaps even greater than the Supreme Ruler, divine Love—able to countermand God's, Love's, ordinances.
