Related to the Lesson-Sermon for October 6, 1974, in the CHRISTIAN SCIENCE QUARTERLY Subject: Unreality

This portion of the book of Zechariah was written when exiled Jews were returning from colonies in the environs of Babylon to the east of Palestine. There were also Jewish colonies to the west, in Egypt.

Both terms refer to pre-Israelitic inhabitants of Palestine who, like the Hebrews, were Semites. The terms may have ethnic connotations, or they may indicate urbanites (dwellers in fortified cities) and rural folk (dwellers in unwalled peasant villages in Palestine's mountain country) respectively.

Along with Gomorrah, one of five ancient cities in the Valley of Siddim, today presumed submerged under the waters of the southern part of the Dead Sea. The area is rich in petroleum and natural gas; it is thought that seepage may have brought about the explosion and massive fire by which the city was destroyed about 1900 B.C.
