A few years ago I went to summer school in a country where I was the only Scientist for hundreds of miles.

One day a friend and I took an all-day bicycle tour of the surrounding countryside. That evening after our return I noticed at dinner that I was having difficulty in breathing. After dinner the situation grew worse until I finally had to excuse myself from the group. By the time I reached the dorm the pain was so severe that I could neither sit nor lie comfortably, and could not seem to pray for myself. I felt alone, afraid, and unable to call for help.

In a short while my roommate came to ask if she could do anything for me. She was of a different religion, and although we had discussed Christian Science, I did not want to intrude on her way of thinking by asking her to read to me. But suddenly I saw that this girl was really God's idea, reflecting the very presence of Love. Here was my help! Love had not left me alone; God's care was manifested in a way I needed at that moment. The girl knew I was a Christian Scientist, and offered to assist in the manner most meaningful to me. I saw she could help me without interfering with her relationship to her own religion.
