Knowing and Caring
Once I was living in a trouble spot that was hitting the world headlines in the newspapers and on the radio. I remember feeling that nobody from outside knew enough about the situation to be able to help very much.
An experienced Christian Scientist happened to be passing through at the time, and I went to see him. I was quite determined to make sure that at least one person would go away well informed about this very special place and its very special problems. Instead, he talked to me for an hour or more about the ever-presence of God.
This wasn't because he didn't care or didn't want to help. He knew that in the time we had it would help far more for him to assure me of the ever-presence of God than to give time only to a discussion of the human situation. It was only on the way home I realized that for the first time for months I had actually forgotten I was in that trouble spot.
