After a medical verdict more than twenty years ago, I believed myself at the end of human existence. The diagnosis was cancer of the liver.
When the doctor announced that there was no longer anything to be done, I turned to Christian Science. Christmas Day my sister telephoned a Christian Science practitioner. She came to spend several hours with my sister and me, showing us how to study this, to us, new religion. I was in an extreme state of weakness, and could only listen to what my sister read to me from the Bible and from the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. From that moment all medication was given up.
About two months later, accompanied by the practitioner, I went out for the first time. I lived on a top floor in a building that had no elevator. It was a sore trial to go back up to our apartment, but at the same time it was a very beautiful victory over mortal mind and the belief in disease and disability. After a time I was able to return to my work, which was very engrossing and demanding because of the responsibility of the position.
