A few years ago my husband and I were vacationing in a popular resort city. One evening after dinner we decided to window-shop in an area of lovely stores. As we crossed the street, a young man came out of the shadows almost directly in front of me. He hesitated and then smiled a friendly "hello" to me. I automatically responded, thinking how sweet he was.
We ambled slowly along, looking into the store windows. My husband was about five feet from me, engrossed in a window display, when suddenly I felt someone tugging at my purse. I had the strap across my arm and instinctively hung on. The purse contained all our remaining funds for the trip, plus a number of national credit cards.
The young man who was trying to take my purse was evidently wearing tennis shoes, and in the ensuing struggle we both were absolutely quiet. My husband continued looking into the store window, not noticing what was going on.
