Christian Science Is Not Do-It-Yourself-ism
Some people want to be alone when they're in trouble or feel ill. But the usual tendency of the human mind is to look for personal comfort. A child runs to his mother; she, in her turn, is likely to call upon others. But Christian Science favors the Bible's recommendation to turn first to God rather than people. "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man," Ps. 118:8; says the Psalmist.
To some this may appear bleak and impractical. Unacquainted with the immense power of God and the warmth and practicality of His love, they may suppose that the Bible and Christian Science are telling them to face an ordeal alone without comfort or aid. Not being able to see any physical evidence of God's presence, or of something being done to help the human situation, they may believe that nothing is being done, and the sufferer is being left to his own inadequate resources.
