Christian Science Is Not Do-It-Yourself-ism

Some people want to be alone when they're in trouble or feel ill. But the usual tendency of the human mind is to look for personal comfort. A child runs to his mother; she, in her turn, is likely to call upon others. But Christian Science favors the Bible's recommendation to turn first to God rather than people. "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man," Ps. 118:8; says the Psalmist.

To some this may appear bleak and impractical. Unacquainted with the immense power of God and the warmth and practicality of His love, they may suppose that the Bible and Christian Science are telling them to face an ordeal alone without comfort or aid. Not being able to see any physical evidence of God's presence, or of something being done to help the human situation, they may believe that nothing is being done, and the sufferer is being left to his own inadequate resources.

But Christian Science is not a do-it-yourself system of cure, any more than is the Christly method of healing taught by Christ Jesus. In line with primitive Christianity it reveals to humanity the healing power of God and how one may avail oneself of it. The Master showed that by turning to God, the divine Mind, for help, one is ensuring that he will receive the warmest comfort and the most potent and quickly available aid there is—sometimes through the good services of the friends He sends and sometimes without. God is, in fact, omnipotent, omnipresent divine Spirit. He is invariably with us wherever we are, and He provides for our every need—even when we may seem to be alone with no human help at hand.
