Let's Think About the Universal Us

Jesus' disciples asked him to teach them how to pray. He answered, "After this manner therefore pray ye." Matt. 6:9; The sharing of this prayer was one of the many ways in which Christ Jesus imparted to his disciples his own awareness of the heavenly Father's all-encompassing nearness and tender care.

Ever since that day when Jesus taught his followers this simple prayer—what has come to be known as the Lord's Prayer—generations of worshipers have prayed to the Father of all in these same words, and have found in them a deep sense of comfort and inspiration. What an immensity of love goes out in waves of blessing whenever we pray in this familiar way!

Have you ever noticed how many times the word "us" appears in the Lord's Prayer—"give us," "forgive us," "deliver us," and so forth? The prayer even starts with the word "our."
