How a Schoolteacher's Love Can Heal

The great teacher, Christ Jesus, based his teaching on our heavenly Father's all-encompassing love and its power to lift our thinking to His perfect creation, including man. As the Bible reveals, man is spiritual, made in God's image and likeness (see Gen. 1:26, 27, 31). Jesus' life and demonstrations show that man is not the victim of circumstance, that he has God-given dominion, reflecting his Father's goodness, from which he can never be separated. The Master said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing." John 6:63;

In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy emphasizes this spiritual teaching and explains its healing efficacy. Through spiritual revelation she saw that man is not mortal but the spiritual idea, or reflection, of divine Life and Love. She writes of the true man: "He is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas; the generic term for all that reflects God's image and likeness; the conscious identity of being as found in Science, in which man is the reflection of God, or Mind, and therefore is eternal; that which has no separate mind from God; that which has not a single quality underived from Deity." Science and Health, p. 475;

The schoolteacher, through understanding Christian Science, can base his thinking on this certainty of God's all-power and goodness and its expression in spiritual man. He can look beyond the appearance of a troubled, unhappy child to the child God knows. Through spiritualizing his thought he can replace with quiet patience and confidence any irritation, frustration, and anxiety he may feel.
