When the Symptoms Appear

When symptoms of disease appear, we are wise not to fear, ignore, or be curious about them. None of these mental states are conducive to healing illness.

Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "When the first symptoms of disease appear, dispute the testimony of the material senses with divine Science." In the next paragraph she adds, "Rise in the conscious strength of the spirit of Truth to overthrow the plea of mortal mind, alias matter, arrayed against the supremacy of Spirit."  Science and Health, pp. 390, 391;

A symptom of disease objectifies a false concept of being as material and subject to discord; it is the phenomenon of an erroneous, mortal sense. Fear, hatred, greed, and impatience, as well as irritation, self-will, envy, may appear as physical problems. The longer an error—a product of collective material consciousness—is allowed to masquerade as one's own individual thinking, the more difficult it can become to "overthrow the plea of mortal mind."
