"Just one more bite!"
Sound familiar? But how often was it only one bite? Seem harmless? Of course. Why not enjoy oneself?
We're getting close to the problem involved here. Can you guess it? Why, yes, self-indulgence! It's one of the more subtle members of an evil family—the "self" family. Other prominent members of this family are self-righteousness, self-justification, and self-will. But self-condemnation, self-absorption, plain old selfishness, intemperance, lack of control, and extravagance all belong, too. Mrs. Eddy more than once couples appetite with passion in her writings. Nice company for self-indulgence!
Fortunately, as Christian Science makes clear, no matter how many names or forms erring thought may assume, it has no value or reality, since it doesn't belong to the infinitude of God's goodness. Man is the pure reflection of his Maker, divine Spirit. He is wholly spiritual, and hence includes no material yearnings or weaknesses. This is the truth of our being, and as we hold to it, we can get free from any one of the self family.
