In the spring of 1931, various doctors discovered that I had tuberculosis of the spine. I was punctured repeatedly, but the wound kept discharging. Late in the summer I found myself in great pain with every movement. I could no longer straighten myself up or remain straight. At this time I was supposed to be put into a complete body cast, and for this purpose I was to be admitted to a hospital distant from my home. My family did not want to let me go, as a definite healing could not be promised.

An orthopedic corset with braces and crutches was prepared for me. I had to wear this apparatus strapped on me day and night. I had to have the heel of my right shoe made five centimeters higher because my body had already become so crooked. Now I felt no pain, but I could make only restricted movements, and had to be dressed and undressed.

While I was in this condition, the first copies of The Herald of Christian Science were brought to me, and while reading the Herald I discovered that this was a teaching I had sought for a long time. I realized that it was false thinking that had made me ill. I wrote to a Christian Science practitioner in Berlin, since there was none in my town, and asked for treatment, which was lovingly given. My attention was directed to the ninety-first Psalm, which begins with these words: "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust." After the first absent treatment I felt great joy and relief. After a few days I did not let myself be strapped into the apparatus again, and there was no more pain, either.
