I became a student of Christian Science when a member of my family was healed of a lung disease through Christian Science treatment. Several physicians had said she would not live through the night. This happened over fifty years ago, and the healing has been permanent.

My husband witnessed this healing and went to church and Christian Science lectures with me occasionally, but he did not study Science. He smoked and was accustomed to social drinking. This went on for about fifteen years, when he began to drink heavily. This resulted in many arguments in our home.

After about six months, when there seemed to be no improvement, I decided to leave him. I went to the home of relatives. They were both employed, so I had time to study the Bible, and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and to pray. In the Bible Lesson that week was the account of Moses, including this passage (Science and Health, p. 321): "When, led by wisdom to cast down his rod, he saw it become a serpent, Moses fled before it; but wisdom bade him come back and handle the serpent, and then Moses' fear departed." It goes on to say that it became a staff on which to lean. I saw that I could not run away from this problem. I decided to go back to my husband. This was very difficult for me to do. My resolve was to live Christian Science the very best I could, not by words but by example.
