The fiery trial (I Pet. 4:12)
The Greek word purosei, here translated as "fiery trial," refers to the refining flame used for testing precious metals. The emphasis is not on the destructive element of the flame but on its purifying power. Scholars have seen this passage as applying to the Christian community the prophecy of Malachi 3:1—5, in which the priests themselves are the first to be purified.
This is the condemnation (John 3:19)
