I count my Christian Science Sunday School training as my number one blessing, and the second, my dear parents who have been steadfast, loving, dedicated Christian Scientists and who placed me in the Sunday School. Between the two, I have been taught the desire to obey and love the Father, the Giver of all good.
We have had many proofs of God's care in our family. All five of our children have had opportunities to apply their own understanding of the truth.
About three years ago I received a call from our school principal, informing me that our nine-year-old daughter had been badly burned on the arm during a cooking demonstration in the classroom. I thanked him for calling, and after hanging up I began to express gratitude for the love and concern being expressed. On the way to school I claimed the child's freedom from the belief of accident, and her ever-present perfection. I thanked God she had never left the presence of her divine Father-Mother. I learned later she had immediately turned to "the scientific statement of being" and experienced no pain. The closing words of the statement, found on page 468 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, are: "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual." The healing was accomplished within a very few days, and within a month no trace of an injury remained.
More recently our oldest son complained of two painful sizable lumps on his chest. There did appear to be such a condition. We sat down and read the chapter in Science and Health entitled "Animal Magnetism Unmasked." Our son had been studying danger signals and symptoms of disease in school. This chapter helped us see that his true nature as a spiritual idea had not been impressed and was not susceptible to disease symptoms. After his retiring I spent several hours studying the word "innocence" and its derivations in Science and Health with the help of the Concordance. I realized the boy's purity and freedom from such claims of error as irritability, irritation, temper, disobedience, friction, un-loveliness of character, all of which had of late appeared as part of his experience. I saw clearly that he was a lamb of God.
At the recommendation of my Christian Science teacher I also pondered the statement from Unity of Good by Mrs. Eddy (p. 60), "This false sense of substance must yield to His eternal presence, and so dissolve." This is what took place. Within a very short time not a vestige of the abnormal physical condition remained, and the unlovely traits in the boy's character slowly began to fade away. What can I say but, "Thank You, Father, 'for [Your] goodness, and for [Your] wonderful works to the children of men!'" (Ps. 107:8.)
I am extremely grateful for these and many other healings, for dedicated practitioners, class instruction, and membership in The Mother Church and a branch church.
