Seeing Man Through the Lens of Spiritual Sense

The study of Christian Science can free us from bondage to the human body—from an obsessive preoccupation with its pains and pleasures. We learn to look at man through the spotless lens of spiritual sense and see him as the reflected image of God, perfect divine Mind.

The hypochondriac fearfully watches with morbid interest for symptoms of disease, while, for a very different reason, the sensualist, pandering to his body and its pleasurable feelings, centers his attention on a physical sense of man's identity. Both extremes unite in a common error—viewing man through the distorted glass of the material senses, seeing him as a material entity governed by material laws.

The healing practice of Christian Science proves beyond cavil that man is really spiritual. This is in accord with the account of creation in the first chapter of Genesis, which records that God— who the Bible tells us is infinite Spirit—made man in His likeness. Glimpsing something of this great fact, the prophet Isaiah wrote, "Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?" Isa. 2:22;
