About fifty years ago I was given a copy of the Christian Science...

About fifty years ago I was given a copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, on condition that I not only read it but study it. Having heard that Christian Science heals, I accepted the gift and the conditions because of the hope it held out to me. When I was born, I was so weak and delicate I was not expected to live. The weak and delicate condition remained with me, and was a handicap in all I attempted to do.

Some little time after studying the textbook, I realized that the physical difficulties had vanished. I was healed and lived a normal life. I then moved from my hometown to a country village where I had been appointed Head Mistress of the Infants' School.

One evening I received a message requesting that I visit one of the little pupils, who had been in a road accident on her way home from school. I went and was with the child quite some time. The child later recovered completely. When I was ready to leave, the evening had advanced to night. The house was some distance from my own through the village in a road unfamiliar to me, and when I left and the door was shut behind me, I was in pitch darkness. Reaching the garden gate, I turned to shut it but could not find it, and having turned, did not know the direction in which I was facing. I was lost! Then came the thought, "Well, if Christian Science is really true, it should help me right now." I tried to think of a statement of the truth I had been studying. The only thought that came to me was a verse from the Bible: "The Lord is my light and my salvation" (Ps. 27:1). With this I felt a kind of glow, and was immediately able to distinguish the gate and the direction in which I should walk.
