Many years ago when one of our daughters was five years old...

Many years ago when one of our daughters was five years old, she became alarmingly ill. Despite prayerful work by a consecrated Christian Science practitioner, the condition was not healed immediately, and my husband, who was not a Christian Scientist, called a medical doctor, who in turn called two child specialists. They took her to the hospital and said she had a rare disease called streptococcic meningitis, for which they had no cure, and that they never had known a child to survive such an ordeal.

One of the specialists gently said to me, "I know you love your little girl, but because you do you must brace yourself to give her up, for if by some miracle she should live, we do not know how she would be affected. She might never walk; or she might be affected mentally."

All this time my mother and the faithful practitioner stood steadfastly by me. My husband and I prayed as we had never prayed before. One day, sitting in the hospital room, I was overcome with a sense of helplessness, and I said aloud, "Dear heavenly Father, I have done all I can. She is Your child, and You will have to take care of her." In a few moments the angel thought came to me, loud and clear, "The child is God's, and God's child is never sick." I was immediately released from fear and discouragement and the responsibility of mortal parenthood. Even when one of the doctors said, "She isn't any worse, but don't get your hopes up, for she can't possibly live," I was not impressed or discouraged, nor did I doubt.
