"The time for thinkers"

Cole, Pierce-Arrow, Lexington, Winton, Kissel, Duesenberg, Essex. My brother and I used to try to beat each other calling out the names of automobiles as we could recognize them coming out of the distance.

From the back seat of our 1921 Studebaker each car looked different from the other. But how alike most of them look now!

Doesn't the penchant for conformity in an industry where technical knowledge could present infinite variety tell us something of a basic human desire? When individuals in a group conform to accepted patterns, they tend to feel secure. When a pattern is broken, they feel insecure. Because of this tendency new ideas tend to be resisted, sometimes to the point of hatred and violence. And this resistance interferes with the orderly solution of many of mankind's problems.
