"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble"...

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1). "No power can withstand divine Love" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 224). These words from the Bible and from the Christian Science textbook have been proved many times since I began, thirty-some years ago, to study Christian Science.

About two years after I began to study Science and Health, my son, who was a student in junior high school, frequently played baseball in a playground several blocks from our home. One evening, about dinnertime, he came home with a very black eye and forehead. He had been hit by a ball so hard that he fell to the ground unconscious for a few seconds. He insisted on finishing the game and then came home with boys who lived near.

He immediately lay down and went to sleep. As I had been a medical nurse before I found Christian Science, I recalled certain medical laws concerning head injuries. I was terrified, and since I had no telephone I hurried to a neighbor, who was a church member, and asked to use hers. I called a Christian Science practitioner for help. She apparently was aware of fear in my voice and worked prayerfully to dispel it, for just as I reached my door the fear suddenly left me completely, and I knew that divine Love was the only power and nothing could harm this child of God.
