Although I often made fun of Christian Scientists, I loved my best friend who was one, and occasionally I attended church with her, unaware that the truth expressed there was taking hold in my thinking. During that time, my father, who had been given up by the doctors, received his healing through the prayerful treatment of my friend's mother, who was a devoted Christian Scientist.

She gave us a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and when I began to read it, I knew that the little book I held in my hand was the most priceless possession I would ever own. Christian Science wasn't just another religion; it was warm and satisfying. It was all that my heart had been searching for, and it illuminated the pages of the Bible with unparalleled inspiration. That was nearly forty years ago, and every year brings renewed inspiration and blessings.

One healing I remember with particular gratitude was that of what appeared to be a condition of blood poisoning. My thumb became infected, and the infection spread through my hand and arm. I was living with relatives who, though dear in every other way, were opposed to Christian Science. I felt that if I called a practitioner for help, I could not risk being overheard, and that if they discovered the gravity of the condition, they would rush me to a doctor or a hospital. My sweater hid the swollen and inflamed arm, and the bandage on my hand I shrugged off as "just a sore thumb."
