More than fifty years ago a friend of mine who later became my husband gave me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. At that time I was a member of an orthodox church and knew very little about Christian Science. However, I started to read the textbook with an open mind, and was so impressed with the chapter on Prayer that I reread it several times. In the meantime I began to attend services in a Church of Christ, Scientist.

Up to that time prayer, to me, meant petitioning God for help. I soon began to understand that God answers our prayers by virtue of His allness. Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 243 in Science and Health, "Truth, Life, and Love are a law of annihilation to everything themselves, because they declare nothing except God."

The first healing I personally witnessed was the healing of an aunt for whom the doctors said they could do no more, as she was in a coma and to all material sense was passing on. The doctor, as he left the case, told the daughter that my aunt's death was a matter of only a few hours. My cousin knew I was interested in Christian Science, and she called me and asked if I thought Christian Science could help her mother. I remembered reading Mrs. Eddy's statement about prayer (ibid., p. 1): "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." I recall saying to my cousin, "All things are possible to God."
